Raw Materials: Wood - Curator

Raw Materials: Wood was the first in a series of exhibitions and events at the Nunnery Gallery that explore the industrial heritage of east London through the key materials of its past. An explorative exhibition and diverse collection of archive images and objects, together with work from contemporary makers, casting an insight into both our past and present. Artist Silke Dettmers sculptural work, was especially commissioned for the exhibition, offering a surreal reflection that subtly mimics the forms and materials of industry. Work from students of the Buildings Crafts College was also presented, who incorporated the project's research into their furniture making course.

The exhibition is part of a series through Bow Arts Nunnery Gallery and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Foundation For FutureLondon. With special thanks to Hackney, Haringey and Newham archives, and the Buildings Crafts College, The Carpernters’ Company, Geffrye Museum, Jewish Museum London and the V&A for their support.
